Motorcycle Insurance in Edmonton - What You Need to Know

The average cost of motorcycle insurance is unique to the individual rider. Your level of experience, age, type of bike you have and riding history all effect how rates are determined by insurers.

In Edmonton, motorcycle insurance must include Third-Party Liability and Accident Benefits coverage—these are the only required types. All other insurance options are optional.

Motorcycle insurance is legally required in Alberta, providing essential protection for riders while ensuring compliance with provincial laws.

Common factors that affect premiums include :

  • The make and model
  • Location
  • If you have passengers or not
  • Your age and riding experience
  • How you ride – touring, commuting, and how much mileage
  • Riding record and insurance history

Typically, a motorcycle insurance policy consists of several components:

Loss or Damage Coverage: This covers your bike if it is damaged in an accident and protects you against other risks such as theft, fire and vandalism to name a few.

Third-Party Liability: This covers if you've caused damage to a third party's property or to their personal well-being. There is a required minimum amount required by provincial laws (ie. 200K in Ontario) but is recommended to have 1-2 million.

Accident Benefits: This covers if you and your passenger were to be injured in an accident

Hit-and-run coverage: This is actually a mandatory coverage that not everyone has. This covers you if an at-fault driver leaves the scene of an accident or is uninsured.

A standard motorcycle insurance policy typically includes third-party liability, accident benefits and uninsured automobile coverage.
