Drivers in their 50s and 60 are safe and reliable due to experience and driving hours. As drivers enter their 70s and 80s, premiums tend to get higher again. As we get older in life, insurance can get more costly due to potentially higher risks involved. Finding affordable coverage as a senior driver can be a challenge. So, if you happen to live in London, you can check out some options for car insurance in London, Ontario to consider. Insurance companies classify senior drivers as a higher risk group due to a decline in hearing, vision, and response time. There are some tips that can help seniors to begin to save on insurance:

  • Join a defensive driving course

  • Buy a car that is affordable to insure

  • Maintain a clean driving record

  • Shop around to compare rates on insurance.

Here are some valuable tips on how to get cheap car insurance:

  • Bundle your policies

  • Request low mileage discounts

  • Maintain a good credit score

  • Install safety devices

Auto insurance in Ontario and in Alberta

As long as you have a good driving history and meet the requirements of your license, you have a chance at getting a good rate even as a senior driver. Feel free to see possible quotes for car insurance in Oshawa, Ontario or car insurance in Guelph, Ontario.

In Ontario, once you turn 80 years old, you will be required to go for a renewal program for your driver’s license to test your driving abilities and to ensure safety on the roads. These include:

  • A vision test

  • In-class screening assignments

  • Your driving record

  • An interactive group education session

In Alberta, at ages 75, 80, and every 2 years there after, you will need to provide a medical report from a doctor to be able to renew your driver’s license. If your doctor feels as though a change in health may affect your ability to drive safely, a driving assessment may be requested regardless of age.

If you’re a senior driver in Ontario, here are some other ways to lower your car insurance premiums:

  • Join a professional affiliation: insurance companies will offer discounts (i.e. CARP, Canadian Association for Retired Persons)

  • Reduce your commutes: Less commutes at any age can have an impact on insurance, but while retired, your commutes can definitely make you eligible for further discounts.

  • Do your best to stay healthy: Getting regular checkups for your eyesight, hearing, and general health can help you be safer behind the wheel.

  • Keep your vehicle in good shape: Keeping your vehicle in good condition can help with discounts too. Doing vehicle maintenance and inspecting your brakes on a regular basis is the way to go.
