Travelers Incorporates Drone Use Into Claims Analysis

In an effort to improve efficiency and safety in assessing claims, Travelers has incorporated using drones to assist in the claims process.

The Claim University, Travelers’ 200,000-square foot facility in Windsor, Conn. that provides training and development for more than 11,000 claims employees, has had hundreds of employees become certified drone operators. (Insurance Journal).

In order for an employee to become certified to fly drones, they must:

• Complete hands-on flight training at The Claim University
• Pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) exam

With the devastating hurricanes that touched down this past September, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, drone use is at the forefront of Travelers’ claim assessment teams. In Houston, of the 600 employees tasked with evaluating the devastation in the area, 65 are certified drone pilots. (AP News).

‘’Safely and efficiently evaluating damage, especially when thousands of people are affected and needing to activate their policies, is a huge challenge for the insurance industry,’’ Matthew Alston, COO of Surex, said. ‘’In Canada, we’ve seen the Calgary Flood, the Ontario Ice Storm and the Fort McMurray Wildfire within the past five years. Incorporating technology will help insurers better serve their customers.’’

The drones provide 4K and 8K high resolution video and still images of the area being assessed.
