What you need to know about Black Friday 2019 in Canada

This week you’ll probably start to see the Black Friday sales start leading up to the big day this Friday, November 29th. Are you ready to shop for those crazy sales like a new Google Home, that pair of jeans you’ve been wanting or some early gifts to beat the Christmas rush?

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday occurs annually on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, and is followed by sales continuing until the next Monday, named Cyber Monday. Retailers often mark down seasonal products or end of stock items, but in recent years they have added more things to the sales. You may even be able to find your favourite products marked down by as much as 50% or more.

What are people spending their money on?

According to MarketingWeek, one in four shoppers are planning to make a purchase at this year’s Black Friday deals. Some of the product categories that see the biggest discounts are:

  • Electronics

  • Appliances

  • Winter gear

  • Clothes and sneakers

  • Travel

Some retailers you may want to shop at:

  • Walmart

  • Amazon

  • Toys R Us

  • Samsung

  • Apple

  • Best Buy

  • The Home Depot

Black Friday tips for Canadians

  1. If you want specific products in the right colour and size, go early because if you wait there may not be one left for you to buy!

  2. If you want to purchase the bigger discounted items you’ll want to wait until the end of the sale as that’s when retailers are likely to do final discounting

  3. Visit online coupon sites like RedFlagDeals for special offers, or download the apps of your favourite stores so you can get the details on what will be on sale, or any hourly or early bird promos.

  4. If you’re looking to find cheap sales on furniture, you may want to wait until January when it’s the best time to buy according to money expert Kerry Taylor

  5. Looking to take one the cheapest trips to go on in 2020? Booking around Black Friday can save a lot of money, especially in organized travel groups and all-inclusive vacations. You’ll be likely to see big savings from Air Canada Vacations and Booking.com where the prices see steep discounts.
