Do you need to report a stolen licence plate in Ontario?
Yes. If your licence plates have been stolen, you’ll need to report the theft to your local police service as soon as possible.
Reporting the theft creates an official record of the incident and allows police to flag the stolen plates if they're later connected to another vehicle or criminal activity. You’ll also be required to provide police occurrence information in order to replace a stolen licence plate.
Betty Ng, Director of Intelligence and Investigative Operations, Ontario, at Équité Association, says stolen licence plates are often used to disguise another vehicle.
"A stolen plate can be attached to a different vehicle to mask its identity, possibly enabling the vehicle to be involved in illegal activities without detection," Ng told Surex.
When you file the report, keep your occurrence number for your own records, because you’ll need it if you choose to speak with your insurance provider.
Does a stolen licence plate affect your car insurance rates in Ontario?
In most cases, having your licence plates stolen on its own won't increase your car insurance premiums.
Unlike a collision or at-fault claim, replacing stolen licence plates is generally considered an administrative issue rather than an insurance claim. Because of that, most drivers choose to cover the replacement costs themselves rather than filing a claim.
However, it's still worth notifying your insurance company after you've reported the theft to police.
According to Ng, notifying your insurer can help prevent complications if the stolen plates are later connected to another incident.
"Doing so helps prevent misuse of the stolen plate that could lead to collisions or other incidents involving the vehicle, and helps avoid future complications," she notes.
If your vehicle was damaged during the theft, that's a different situation. In that case, contact your insurer to discuss whether it's worth filing a claim and what your policy covers. Your insurer can also answer any questions you have about your coverage and make sure your vehicle information is up to date.
Why do criminals steal licence plates?
Licence plate theft is often connected to broader trends in auto theft and insurance fraud.
Licence plates are attractive to criminals because they're relatively quick to remove and can immediately change the apparent identity of a vehicle. In some cases, stolen plates are attached to stolen vehicles to make them less conspicuous.
In others, they may be used during crimes where the driver wants to avoid being identified through licence plate readers, red-light cameras or witness reports.
Ng says licence plate theft is frequently linked to larger criminal activity, including auto theft and insurance fraud. Reporting the theft promptly helps establish when your plates went missing and creates a record showing they were no longer in your possession if they're later linked to another offence.
While most stolen plates are eventually recovered or discarded, reporting the theft quickly helps create a timeline showing exactly when they left your possession.
How to help prevent licence plate theft
While there's no foolproof way to prevent licence plate theft, there are some steps you can take to help reduce the risk.
For example, installing anti-theft licence plate screws makes it much more difficult to remove plates compared to the standard fasteners. Parking in well-lit areas or secure garages whenever possible can also discourage opportunistic thieves.
Ng also recommends checking your licence plates regularly, particularly after parking in public places.
Although these measures can't eliminate the risk entirely, they can make your vehicle a less attractive target.
