Aviva Canada Adds Earthquake Coverage to BC Home Policies for Free
In an effort to more fully meet their customers' needs, Aviva Canada will include earthquake coverage in all British Columbia homeowner, condominium and tenant insurance policies – at no additional cost – to new and current customers (on renewal).
Aviva is now one of only three insurers to offer earthquake insurance coverage – without restrictions – in all high-risk zones in Canada’s westernmost province. Aviva is also the only insurer to offer earthquake coverage within a home or tenant policy, and not as an add-on to an existing policy.

‘’While all insurers in BC offer earthquake coverage as an endorsement, until today, no company has offered it within a standard policy,’’ Phil Gibson, Aviva Canada Chief Underwriting Officer, said.
The earthquake coverage will include:
- For house and manufactured homeowners: emergency living expenses for earthquake, such as temporary accommodation, food, clothing and transportation costs (up to $25,000)
- For condominium owners: full earthquake coverage for contents, improvements or betterments, condo loss assessment and unit additional protection
- For tenants/renters: full earthquake coverage for contents
Many residents of BC believe they have the required insurance to protect themselves in case of an earthquake. However, Aviva conducted a survey of BC homeowners and found that 60% of those who believe they have adequate coverage do not, in fact, have adequate coverage.
‘’No one should be left in the lurch without coverage that they thought they had,’’ Gibson, continued. ‘’That’s why we’re proud to announce Aviva’s solution to embed earthquake coverage for our customers at no additional cost – offering added value and greater peace of mind.’’
Aviva’s earthquake coverage is currently available in BC only. There are plans to make the offering available in other provinces, in the future.
