Surex was born out of a friendship between two business owners - Lance Miller and Matt Alston - in Magrath, a small town in Southern Alberta. Miller owned a bricks and mortar insurance brokerage and Alston owned a direct marketing company. In 2005, Alston took a leap of faith and agreed to join Miller at his brokerage, and together they soon came to realize the opportunity of going digital, and setting up an online insurance marketplace was where the business needed to go. Originally offering personal lines insurance in Alberta only, Surex now brokers insurance in 9 provinces and all the territories for their 10+ partner insurance carriers. The firm is now one of the fastest growing online insurance providers in Canada.
Eight years after its founding, digital insurance brokerage Surex has reached a major milestone, with a book size of over $100 million. To reach the $100 million figure, the business partners worked hard over the course of 2019 to implement aggressive growth strategies, including leveraging technology to help customers do business the way they want to. “We’ve established a marketplace where people can look at basically the whole market and determine whether they’re getting what they need out of the market or whether there’s something better out there,” said Miller.
